The Leon County Reading Council recognized the following individuals who have made outstanding literacy contributions by presenting them with the LCRC Literacy Award at our Literacy Celebration on
Saturday, April 21, 2007.
Terry Temples
Skilled instructional aide at Hawks Rise Elementary School
Terry Temples is an instructional aide at Hawks Rise Elementary who provides intervention tutoring for struggling readers. She works with small groups and individuals on a daily basis. Mrs. Temples has an education degree and a background as a classroom teacher, which provides a foundation for her well-informed instructional decisions and effective implementation. As a true reflective practitioner, she continues to seek training in specific programs and has studied independently to learn about current research and reading strategies. While well-informed teaching makes Mrs. Temples very effective in her reading tutoring, her greatest strength is the relationship she is able to form with each individual student.

Louise Freeman
Retired Media Specialist from Hartsfield Elementary School
State Board member of FAME
As a Media Specialist, Louise Freeman has fostered a love of literature at Hartsfield School. She has always been very supportive of the Leon Reading Council, serving as the Building Rep for over a decade. Louise continues to support the Reading Council and can be found at Vote 4 Book Sessions as well as Building Rep meetings, the Writing Contest, etc. Anywhere you find the Reading Council, you usually find Louise Freeman!
Louise’s literacy interests extend far beyond her school and the local reading council. Louise has been a State Board member of FAME for many years as well as the state technology board. She helps plan their state conferences which brings outstanding speakers to our state to interact with media specialists and teachers.
For all the ways that Louise continues to share her literacy skills with children and adults and for her many years of loyalty to the Leon County Reading Council, we thank her and wish her the best in her retirement!

Evelyn Florence
Retired teacher, former President of FRA, mentor for new teachers
When Evelyn Florence be-came president of the Florida Reading Association in 1999 (she invited me) to join her on the State Board as Co-Chair of the Children‘s Book Award ... Not only did I appreciate meet-ing leaders in the literacy move-ment from around the state, but I saw the critical role Evelyn played at the state level. Just as she has made this confer-ence the success it is because of her hard work and her ties around the state, she has done the same thing on the state and national stage to help involve teachers and interested adults with the movers and shakers in our field. Her tireless efforts to obtain authors and funding for our reading council and state-wide conferences have bene-fited countless people, educa-tors and children alike.
As a classroom teacher, Evelyn was always working out ways to help her students, edu-cationally and financially. This carried over to whatever faculty she was a part of—you could count on Evelyn to get her job done and help everyone else do a better job, also. She has served on numerous commit-tees and as President of our local council, our District Direc-tor, Board Member and State President of the Florida Reading Association.
Now, as a retired teacher, Eve-lyn has taken a leadership role in the retired teachers‘ organiza-tion and will be president of this group next year. She still serves on the FRA Board. She is a mentor for new teachers through Leon County AND she is back working part-time at Apalachee in the after school program to keep helping chil-dren. Just when you think how does she do it all, she has de-cided to go back to school to get her reading endorsement on her certificate. She truly is our En-ergizer Bunny and never stops amazing me with her involve-ment in teaching, teachers, and children. Thank you, Evelyn, for all you have done and continue to do to promote literacy for all in our community, our state and the world.
