What is the Leon County Reading Council?

 

The Leon County Reading Council (LCRC), Tallahassee, FL, is a non-profit organization composed of almost 400 individuals who are interested in promoting literacy at all levels throughout the community.

 

The LCRC is an affiliate of the Florida Reading Association (FRA), with a network of more than 7,000 members, and of the International Reading Association (IRA), a world-wide organization with over 90,000 members in 100 countries throughout the world. The LCRC was chartered in 1960.

 

What are the Benefits of Membership? 

 

  • Participation in special community literacy service projects
  • Invitations to professional development opportunities
  • Networking with local educators, community members, and authors to gain support and new literacy information
  • Connection with other county, state and national reading organizations (FRA and IRA)

 

Ongoing Community Service Projects

 

  • "Books in Waiting" - children's books in doctors' offices
  • Marie Silverman Scholarship Fund
  • Sponsor of the Leon County Spelling Bee
  • Co-Sponsor of the Big Bend Regional Spelling Bee
  • Middle School "Poetry Jam"
  • Annual Young Writers Contest (K-12)
  • "Vote for Books" to promote the FRA Picture Book Award
