The Midnight Walk

Blackness surrounds me as I take my first step into solid darkness. My friends dared me to walk through the forest at midnight because they think it is haunted. "I will believe it when I see it," I keep saying. Everyone at school shares stories of the "haunted" forest.  A man who went in and never came out.  My sister's cat vanishing into the forest.  A mysterious howling heard by kids who live nearby.

I take cautious steps, feeling the knife in my back pocket, which I brought just in case. There are eyes gazing at me through the brush, but I tell myself they belong only to deer. My dim flashlight barely gives me enough light to see a few feet in front of me. The ground is covered with leaves and insects that crunch under my feet.

I hear growling all around me. Suddenly something grabs hold of me and starts pulling me deeper into the forest. I try to pull away, but a hairy arm holds me and is just too strong. Then out of nowhere, I receive a stunning blow to the head. I start to see stars and feeling dizzy, I faint. When I wake up, werewolves and vampires surround me. I am tied to a tree.

Huddled by a campfire, the savage group snickers and spits at me. I am terrified as the bulky creatures shout, "Sacrifice, sacrifice!" Remembering the knife in my back pocket, I manage to take it out, cut the ropes, and run for my life. The group comes chasing after me. I flee, dodging branches that hang in my way.

Miraculously, I am out of the forest. My friends wait for me and I collapse with beads of sweat pouring down my face. "I think I believe you now," I confess to them. It is my first and last walk through the haunted forest.
